AAPA and MedCases Launch Symposia

Alexandria, VA and Philadelphia, PA, October 15, 2007 The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and MedCases, LLC announced the launch of several new symposia in Cardiology, Gastroentrology, Endocrinology and General Surgery. Each symposium consists of multiple challenging patient cases presented as engaging clinical simulations. The symposia will be available to members as well as non-members, online through the AAPA website.

Compared with traditional and typical online case-based education, these simulations provide a decision-making–oriented reflection and reasoning experience for participants enabling them to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Additionally, they incorporate a self-assessment system that shows learners how their decisions compare with those of the experts.

Over the last two years, MedCases’ interactive patient simulations have been used by the AAPA to provide over 50,000 credits to more than 4,500 members who completed more than 33,000 cases.

“PAs are an important component of the American health care system. Their clinical experience and skill has progressively developed over the years and plays an important role in the patient’s treatment team,” said Ken Brady, Director of Strategic Business Development & Marketing at the AAPA. “We are excited to build on our two year partnership. Our independent innovative case-based initiatives will continue to service the continuing education needs of PAs and other health care practitioners with the ultimate objective of achieving better patient care,” said Sanjay Virmani, CEO of MedCases, LLC.

AAPA is the only national medical organization that represents the approximately 64,000 physician assistants (PAs) in all medical and surgical specialties.

Physician assistants are licensed health professionals who practice medicine as members of a team with their supervising physicians. PAs deliver a broad range of medical and surgical services to diverse populations in rural and urban settings. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and prescribe medications.

AAPA is the only national organization to represent physician assistants in all medical and surgical specialties. Founded in 1968, the Academy works to promote quality, cost-effective health care, and the professional and personal growth of PAs.
