MedCases, Inc. is Awarded a $749,635 National Institute of Mental Health Contract to Educate Clinicians in HIV Risk Reduction Counseling

MedCases and University of Connecticut Collaborate to Develop Innovative Continuing Medical Education

PHILADELPHIA, October 12, 2004 — MedCases Inc., a leading accredited continuing medical education (CME) provider for physicians, announced today that it has received a $749,635 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research contract from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). This award provides funding for the development of an Internet-based CME program to train physicians in how to conduct HIV risk reduction counseling with HIV-positive patients. The program will be financed entirely with Federal funds from the NIMH, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. HHS-N-278-2004-44090C.  This two-year project is based on the success of a Phase I pilot program, also funded by the NIMH, and implemented by MedCases earlier this year.

The core of the program is based on the successful Options/Opciones Project, developed at the University of Connecticut’s Center for HIV Intervention and Prevention. MedCases will be adapting and expanding the live seminar format of the Options/Opciones Project for Web-based delivery. David Toub, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of MedCases, is principal investigator for the project. Deborah Cornman, PhD, Associate Director for Research, Personnel and Operations at the Center for Health/HIV Intervention and Prevention, will serve as program director for the University of Connecticut.

“We are committed to providing clinicians with compelling case-based education,” said MedCases’ President and Chief Executive Officer, Mike Tansey. “This prestigious award reinforces MedCases’ ongoing initiatives in providing high-quality education to physicians and other health care professionals.”

MedCases has assembled a highly regarded group of physicians for its advisory board to provide oversight and guidance for the program. The Advisory Board includes Frederick Altice, MD, Associate Professor, Yale University School of Medicine; Judith Currier, MD, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles; Emily Erbelding, MD, MPH, Asst. Professor, Johns Hopkins University; and Paul Volberding, MD, Vice-Chair, Dept. of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco.
